"Island Beach"

This island is formed when the Merrimack river splits around it heading towards a railroad trestle. It's a beautiful area with plenty of motifs to choose from to paint. This piece is busy but I think it works with the relatively non-detailed beach area. Some day I'll wade across and visit the island. Thanks for visiting!

"Enter the Forest"

This is part of the Heritage Trail in Bedford, NH. It's a nice walk along the Merrimack river. I sketched this near the end of the day hence the long shadows crossing the path. That time of day usually has more interesting shadow patterns as well as dawn. I believe I had to go back for a second session because I lost the light on the first session as the sun set behind the trees on the left that are out of sight. A peaceful scene. Enjoy!

"Gnarled Tree"

This old tree is in my hometown near the city center. I believe it has since been trimmed or removed. I am glad I got a sketch of it while it existed. I used a micron pen for experimentation and I am pleased with the results. It's a good media for more detail if desired. I sketched this on site sitting by the roadside with cars whizzing by. A nice portrait of an old tree. Enjoy!

"Hollis Library"

Sketched on site in my favorite old lawn chair with my backpack of drawing supplies. I was in a very small town common area which is quite quaint. The sun kept coming in and out so I made the best of it at the end. Thanks for visiting!

"River Scene"

Another scene along the Merrimack river right near my house. Very nice place to visit. Just a few days later there was no beach as we had so much rain. The river is always rising and falling. A quick half hour sketch in vine charcoal. Thanks for visiting!

"Walk with Me"

I really enjoyed this piece and I think it came out quite well. I like the different dark and light values and how the path in the grass pulls you into the scene where the old shed is hidden amongst the trees. This was sketched on one of my favorite properties in Hollis, NH. Thanks for visiting!

"Covered Bridge, Sunny Day"

A very hot day for this one. I was getting boiled alive while sitting in my lawn chair dedicated to rendering this scene! This bridge was rebuilt so it's brand new. I have pics and drawings/paintings of the older one. A nice old covered bridge in a small town. What a treat. Thanks for visiting!

"Hollis Homestead"

This is a beautiful site in Hollis, NH where the city bought this old farm property. I go here often as there are a few buildings being swallowed up by nature and they look so natural. The property is so nice and varied. I love sketching there. This piece came together well with subtle shadows and plenty of variety. Thanks for visiting!

"Mine Falls Reflections"

Another plein air piece (sketched on site). I put a little more detail than I usually do as there were many elements man made. But there are some loose spots as well. Very hot that day and clear and sunny. Very rewarding session! Thanks for visiting!

"Off in the Distance"

This is known as the Heritage Trail and it goes all through New England. This small section is along the Merrimack river in Bedford, NH. The middle section of the drawing looks like a stream but is actually a walking path. Didn't notice while I was sketching it! Thanks for visiting!
"Church in the Distance"

I sat along the Nashua river in the downtown area of Nashua, NH and sketched this piece on a beautiful early summer day. It's a little busy but the church looks pretty good in the distance. Thanks for visiting!

"Back on Track"

A quick sketch of a scene not far from my home. I set my chair right along the railroad tracks and proceeded to sketch. Next thing I know a couple of dogs come right up to me wagging their tails and vociferously sniffing my sketch pad! The dog owners apologized right away but I told them I didn't mind because I love dogs. It was the first sketch of the season for me. I worked on it for about an hour or so. A good start to the outdoor sketching season. It was an unusually hot and sunny day - first of the year. Spring is here! Thanks for visiting!

"Island View, Pawtuckaway"

This is a beautiful park with lots of trails, ponds, islands, etc. I found this view to be rather peaceful so I sat down in my chair and sketched for an hour. I like the smaller islands on either side which adds interest to the focal point - the larger island. They are all different shapes and sizes overall so it doesn't look repetitious. Thanks for visiting!
