"Lazy River Bend"

I sketched this just up the road from New Boston center. It's quite a beautiful scene and it was just sitting there waiting for me to sketch it! I liked how the two trees flanked the river on either side and the sporadic rocks in the river added to the scene. The bend in the river was just in the perfect place and the distant bridge was just a little icing on the cake. Thanks for visiting!

"Peaceful Day by the River"

I sketched this scene on a beautiful summer day in June right by the river. This place is not too far from my home and I visit there often. It's a popular local spot for people to bring their dogs to swim, just run around, or for fisherman to try their luck. I love the power of the railroad trestle against the low lying river and the old, bent trees. Thanks for visiting!

"Leaving New Boston"

This was done plein air (out in the open on site) on a beautiful sunny day. I sat alongside the road on the sidewalk in the shade - at least for a while as I ended up in the sun! Traffic was light as was an occasional breeze. I liked the way the sun hit the house on the left. The road kind of brings you to that point. The houses and trees along the way as you go up the road are my secondary focal points - more like a supporting cast to the main focal point - the house in the sun. I had a very satisfying session. Thanks for visiting!

"Mem"

Another portrait commission for a client. I feel particularly proud of this one as it seems to have come out so nice. I like all the values on the face and how it all balances out. I feel I caught her personality and expressive smile. Thanks for visiting!

"Along the River in Waltham"

I was in Waltham, MA recently and had some time to kill so I walked over to the bridge by the river and sat down on a bench and started to sketch this scene. It was breezy and a bit chilly but it was a nice motif and lots of people around - walking, running, etc. It got very cool a bit later so I sped up to finish sooner as it was getting uncomfortable. It's a beautiful area right in downtown Waltham. Enjoy!

"Angela"

SOLD

This little girl has such delicate features. Her hair is wispy and her smirk oh so subtle. Very subtle creases all around the mouth and chin that were necessary to be accurate to really capture her likeness. Very happy with the result. Enjoy!

"On the Corner of Depot and Pleasant St"

I sat in my car on a cold winter day and decided to sketch this house. It had enough interest to challenge me. I enjoyed the process and feel happy with the result. I like the different shaped trees behind the house and the different elements that make up the house and yard. Kept me on my toes. Thanks for visiting!

"Milford Barn"

I sketched this from inside my car on a mild January day. I used vine charcoal which is very soft and malleable. I can move things around easily and I use the kneaded eraser to draw with too. A nice simple sketch. Thanks for visiting!

"Dinho"

Another successful commission. I had three references for this piece and the quality wasn't that good so it was a little more of a challenge to render. The eye had red eye from the camera so I had to try and get rid of that. Overall it came out fine. Thanks for visiting!

"Westbrook Yesterday"

This is the town of Westbrook, Maine from a time long ago. A commission that was quite a challenge! Composed from a snapshot in black and white. Very interesting to tackle this one. I used a bright yellow tone to help simulate the bright light of the sun on the dirt roadway and sidewalks. The old cars were a challenge too. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for visiting! :)

"High Noon"

I headed up north for this piece. A nice, quiet farm called Muster Field Farm in Sutton, NH. It was a perfect day and this scene was out back behind some buildings. Such a perfect day. This is a two hour study that came out quite well. It's simple, with nice colors and easy on the eyes. Thanks for visiting!

"Wonder Woman"

This is the character Wonder Woman as played by the actress Gal Gadot. I really enjoyed sketching this piece and it seemed to just flow and come out quite easily. I did this over about 5 sessions which was a total of about 8 hours. She is so beautiful and I love the character in the movie. Thanks for visiting!

"Hollis Library"

Sketched on site in my favorite old lawn chair with my backpack of drawing supplies. I was in a very small town common area which is quite quaint. The sun kept coming in and out so I made the best of it at the end. Thanks for visiting!

"River Scene"

Another scene along the Merrimack river right near my house. Very nice place to visit. Just a few days later there was no beach as we had so much rain. The river is always rising and falling. A quick half hour sketch in vine charcoal. Thanks for visiting!

"Walk with Me"

I really enjoyed this piece and I think it came out quite well. I like the different dark and light values and how the path in the grass pulls you into the scene where the old shed is hidden amongst the trees. This was sketched on one of my favorite properties in Hollis, NH. Thanks for visiting!

"Covered Bridge, Sunny Day"

A very hot day for this one. I was getting boiled alive while sitting in my lawn chair dedicated to rendering this scene! This bridge was rebuilt so it's brand new. I have pics and drawings/paintings of the older one. A nice old covered bridge in a small town. What a treat. Thanks for visiting!

"Hollis Homestead"

This is a beautiful site in Hollis, NH where the city bought this old farm property. I go here often as there are a few buildings being swallowed up by nature and they look so natural. The property is so nice and varied. I love sketching there. This piece came together well with subtle shadows and plenty of variety. Thanks for visiting!

"Mine Falls Reflections"

Another plein air piece (sketched on site). I put a little more detail than I usually do as there were many elements man made. But there are some loose spots as well. Very hot that day and clear and sunny. Very rewarding session! Thanks for visiting!

"Restful Place"

Another scene on an abandoned farm of a friend of mine. They have since sold the property. There are endless possibilities for motifs at this place. No one is usually around either. I particularly like the bush to the left of the building. I like the colors and values. The background trees aren't bad either. Needs some minor touch ups. Thanks for visiting!
