This piece of work started out as a plein air piece along the Merrimack river near my home. It was the last plein air adventure I did this year because it was an early day in November and just happened to be unusually warm that day. I only had about an hour before it got very cool and I lost all my sun. I trudged on for another half hour and then called it a day. I've worked it up in the studio since then and here is the finished piece. You can see the remnants of an old bridge that used to be there. I really like the colors in this late autumn scene. Thanks for visiting!

Another colorful piece in the spirit of the harvest season. I realized most of the vegetables had stripes so now I had my title. It was tricky getting all the color and values correct on the shadow side of the vegetables, especially with the stripes creating two values - a lot of work. I love the way the colors glow in this painting! I'll have to do more like this! Thanks for visiting!

Another piece in the spirit of the harvest season. I originally had an apple in there but I felt like I was squeezing in too much so I removed it. That means only squashes remained hence the title! It was fun painting this piece with all the pure colors that you see. I finished the majority of it in one session, then I worked on refinement the next session. I thought I was done until I noticed I forgot to finish the stems on two of the squashes! Done now! Thanks for visiting!

"My Cup Runneth Over"
This is the final painting in my Psalm 23 series. I wanted to portray a feeling of having plenty but keep the focus on actually drinking from a cup, or glass in this case, even though that isn't exactly what the saying means. It means having abundance that overflows in your life. I like the colors and the look of having had plenty. Thanks for visiting!

In the spirit of the Fall season I have created a little piece that reminds me of the harvest. I really enjoyed using the pure colors of orange, red and yellow. The squash on the right was a delight to render with its subtle colors and interesting value range. Here comes the cool weather! Thank you for visiting!

These beautiful trees in the middle are so elegant and old. They stand about 60 feet high and are so magnificent to look at, especially at dusk when the sun catches the trunks near the top. This is in a local neighborhood in my home town of Merrimack, NH. I really enjoyed painting this piece. Thanks for visiting!

"Under the Tree"
A nice autumn scene where you can relax and enjoy the quiet of the country. I pushed the color for more impact and to indicate the fall season more. It's a simple piece with a simple beauty. Thanks for visiting!

"An Old Friend"
A recent sketch I did on site on Main st. Merrimack, NH. I sat in a lawn chair on the side of the road by a walkway across the street from the tree and sketched for two hours. It's a wonderful old tree that has real character and age. Most people probably don't notice it as it's a little busy in the area. I worked on it a little, later on at home, to finish it up. I am happy with the results. Thanks for visiting!

"Merry Christmas Bedford Falls"
This is a scene from the famous movie 'It's a Wonderful Life". This was a very difficult execution. It was quite a challenge and took me a long while. I am happy with the results though. Thanks for visiting!

"Another Place in Time"
I painted this on a chilly morning in May with bright sunshine and a cool breeze. On the property is a nice old house and a pond next to that. A nice, quaint place. I simplified the scene and added some color to make it more interesting. The barn was my focal point from the beginning. Thanks for visiting!

"Reeds Ferry I, Winter"
This is a small sketch I did on a winter's day sitting in a chair in the snow. It was sunny and nice out so it was a pleasurable experience. I've always loved that tree and the hanging branch with the way it reflects in the water. This used to be an old ferry stop for boats to ship goods up and down the Merrimack river to points south including Boston, MA. Thanks for visiting!
"Trees in Mine Falls Park"
A plein air sketch of a group of trees in Mine Falls Park. It was an overcast day with even light the whole time - no significant shadows. Just enjoyed a nice afternoon sketching out in nature. Enjoy. Thanks for visiting!
A sketch of a river bank in a local park in Merrimack NH. I did this on site and kept a loose feel the whole time. I really enjoyed the experience. Thanks for visiting!
"I Shall Not Want"
This is the first in a series I painted on Psalm 23… "The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want". The basic necessities of life are depicted here - bread and wine. A staple of the time back then. I pushed the color for more excitement. Thanks for visiting!

This is in the Beaver Brook Park area in Hollis NH. I have hiked here many times and always found this bridge to be quite interesting. I usually took a small snack break here while hiking. It actually divides a pond to the left and to the right. I love this time of year just before the snow comes but there is still some color on a sunny day. Lots of effort put into painting that bridge. Thanks for visiting!
"Early Morning Mist"
This is an early morning scene where the sun is just coming up over the mountains and the mist is rising off the water. I love the play of light coming through the bush on the left and also, the subtle colors in the water and the mountains. Thanks for visiting!
I love this time of year. It was bright and sunny and warm for November. This is along the Nashua river where a lot of birds come to enjoy this sanctuary. There is a pond to the left with plenty of reeds and hiding places for the birds to raise their young. My goal was to keep it colorful with plenty of loose brushstrokes but when viewed from a distance it all comes together. Thanks for visiting!
This is a nice fishing spot in the Mine Falls Park area in Nashua, NH. The fallen tree and the birches are long gone now but people still come here to go fishing. I used to sit here in the sun and read or sketch - then I got the idea to do a painting. I love the colors and the way the path leads you into the painting. Thanks for visiting!
"Fisherman's Cottage at Varengeville, after Monet"
This is my version of a painting by Claude Monet. I sometimes do this for a challenge. I tried to capture the colors and loose brushstrokes in the spirit of impressionism. Thanks for visiting!
A nice drive out in the country led me to this road running along a cow pasture. What a beautiful area. I have painted here a number of times. I especially like it in late summer when everything is overgrown. I love the contrast of sunshine and shady areas. Thanks for visiting!
A really quaint, country scene with a lane to walk down along the old fence. Take a walk with me on a beautiful sunny day. I wanted to evoke a peaceful country scene that was bucolic. Thanks for visiting!
A winter scene in Canada. This is near a camp and was taken near dusk. I used artistic license to improve the colors in the sky and really make the birch trees stand out. Thanks for visiting!
This piece was started plein air and finished in the studio. Most of my artwork is finished this way. It was late in the day and the sun was streaking through the trees as it got lower and interesting cloud patterns started to form. A simple, quiet piece. Thanks for visiting!
"Snowy River, Winter Light"
A beautiful winter scene looking down river with the sun in the distance. I loved the bright light coming out of the shadows and the colorful reflections in the water. The deep blue shadows offset the warms of the backgrounds trees. Thanks for visiting!

The final plein air piece.
The actual scene.
A short video.
I went out to paint today at a place I frequent often - the Heritage trail. I went to the opposite end of the trail this time and took a short walk down the trail - it runs along the Merrimack river in Bedord, NH. The sun was in and out my whole session but I didn't chase my shadows. I made sure to paint them in at the beginning and then stayed with it. It's difficult painting where everything is green so I tried to inject some other colors. It's just a sketch with more work needed in the studio as usual. What a gorgeous day! Thanks for visiting!
The final plein air piece.
The actual scene.
A short video.
I was out in Wilton, NH this August day and it was beautiful! I pulled into a small picnic area on the side of the road and thought I'd check out the river. I chose the scene and got setup right away. The light was difficult as clouds kept coming and going and the sun was filtering through the trees. Also, I was in the shade looking into a very bright sunny area so there was a lot of glare and eye strain. Couldn't see colors so well on the palette or the canvas. That's the adventure of plein air painting! The painting is just a start that I will continue in the studio and change and adjust as I see fit. Thanks for visiting!

This is the next one in the pond series. I went with a more yellow/violet them here and it looks like it works out. The water is a little dark but I wanted more mystery in the painting. I really like the tree on the right and how it came out. Sometimes busy areas are hard to work out. Painted alla prima like all the others. Thanks for visiting!

Another in a series I painted on this theme. I attempted to change colors, the sky, shapes, etc. but it still looks very similar to the first one I painted. So the next few I made sure to make them quite different! Having fun! Thanks for visiting!
