"Field on Hawthorne Drive"

A nice, plein air sketch of a wonderful field just off Hawthorne Drive in Bedford, NH. This property is owned by an old farmer and he just lets it be - it's nice and overgrown and left alone. Looks like from the past. Just a simple, quaint sketch.

"Last Day in June"

The final plein air piece.

The actual scene.

A short video.

Went out today to paint a small piece en plein air on the last day of June this year. It was a beautiful, sunny day and I was at one of my favorite places - the Heritage Trail in Bedford, NH! The sketch will need some minor work in the studio with edges and color/value adjustments, but it's mostly finished. Thanks for visiting!

"Summer Sunshine"

One of my favorite spots to paint. Had a lot of fun with this one. The scene is deceiving as I don't have a figure in there for reference. The trees are quite large and there is a drop off to the right that leads to the Merrimack River - quite a nice view. I hope you enjoy this piece! Thanks for visiting!

"Follow The Path"

This area is along the Merrimack River in Bedford, NH. It's known as the Heritage Trail - a beautiful place. I originally started this plein air and then it sat around in the studio for a long time (happens to a lot of my paintings!). I finally finished it up - I warmed up the colors and brightened it up a bit. Thanks for visiting!

"Friday Afternoon"

The final plein air piece.

The actual scene.

A short video.

I worked on this piece for about 3 hours onsite one day on a beautiful friday afternoon. It was very hot and I wasn't feeling so well but I trudged on anyway. I consider the finished piece only a start. I'll typically edit it more in the studio with adjustments here and there. I took a short video of some of my process. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for visiting!

"Dwell in the Lord's House"

From a  series based on Psalm 23… "And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." I'll let the painting speak for itself. Thanks for visiting!

"Thy Staff Comforts Me"

From a series based on Psalm 23… "Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me". I really like the colorful display in this piece. The reds and greens compliment each other well. I felt the resting staff against the tree brought a sense of comfort. Thanks for visiting!

"Prepare a Table"

From a series based on Psalm 23… "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies." This is a colorful piece meant to symbolize plenty. I really enjoyed using the reds in this one. Thanks for visiting!

"Green Pastures"

From a series based on Psalm 23… "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures." This is actually a nice cow pasture in Dunstable, MA. I go out to this area periodically. It's along a busy road with no parking so I have to walk a ways to get there. Certainly a pasture I'd like to lie down in. Thanks for visiting!

"He Restoreth My Soul"

From a series based on Psalm 23… "He restoreth my soul". I felt the bible and rosary beads were appropriate symbols for restoring the soul. Thanks for visiting!

"I Will Fear No Evil"

This is from a series based on Psalm 23… "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." I really tried to make the candle glow. The colors represent days gone by with the parchment yellow and the victorian burgundy. Thanks for visiting!

"May"

This is an iconic place in Hollis, NH. It is known as the old ice house. It's been reconstructed as a replica of the original. There was also a barn, shed and large house. They've rebuilt the barn (not in view). There used to be apple trees to the right but they are gone - now it's just one big field. This was started plein air with touch ups in the studio. It's a wonderful area. I painted this in early May. Thanks for visiting!

"God's Country"

This is a scene in northern NH in the white mountains just below the famous rock formation 'the old man in the mountain'. The rock formation came down in 2004 unfortunately. I like the sunshine squeezing through the mountains in the distance. Thanks for visiting!

"Summer Glow"

I really enjoyed working on this piece. It was a tour-de-force in green for sure. I tried to get a good variety of greens and convey the cool areas and the warm areas, especially the glow of the tree. This is a beautiful place in Nashua, NH along the Nashua river. Thanks for visiting!

"Gentle Path"

This is in Mine Falls in the early morning with the sun rising to the right. I tried to capture the light streaking through the tall pine trees that lined each side of the path. The scale is imperceptible but the trees are very large and the path is quite wide. Thanks for visiting!

"At the Creek"

This little stream runs under a small bridge in a rural area in Landgrove, VT. Just over the bridge is a huge expanse of open farmland and fields. It was a beautiful day and I just stumbled into this bucolic area. I had to climb down to get under the bridge to take this shot. I just love the light and the colors. Thanks for visiting!

"Colors at Dusk"

This is one of my favorite spots to paint on the Heritage Trail in Bedford, NH. It was late in the day and I tried to capture the colors at dusk before the sun got too low. This is a pure plein air piece painted completely outside before the motif. Thanks for visiting.

"Friends"

A simple still life with an apple and a small creamer. As is usual when two things are left in a room they tend to gravitate to one another, like friends. Thanks for visiting.

"Adam and Eve"

The two apples represent Adam and Eve and the fruit they were tempted with. The leaf implies the fig leaves they wore. I wanted a strong red for the apples to signify passion and temptation. I used the complementary of green to really make them stand out. The leaf is symbolic of the fig leaves they wore. Thanks for visiting.

"Anoint Me"

This is part of a series based on Psalm 23… "Thou anointest my head with oil". I felt the blue gave a very calming effect which reaffirms the meaning of the psalm. Also the parchment yellow gives a feeling of a long time ago. Thanks for visiting.
